Veronica Lake: 'I never did cheesecake like Ann Sheridan or Betty Grable. I just used my hair.'

Veronica Lake

Veronica frequently starred in films with Alan Ladd because
at 4' 11½ Veronica made 5 ft 5 Ladd look tall

Their film together 'The Blue Dahlia' drew publicity from (but was otherwise unconnected with) the gruesome murder of Elizabeth Short known posthumously as 'The Black Dahlia'

(Look it up if you want to know the very gory details because

I'm not putting them here)

My favourite Veronica Lake film is 'I married a witch'  made

in 1942

Watch it here

During the second world war the popularity of her

peekaboo hairstyle was blamed for causing industrial

accidents as factory workers copied her style.

Veronica made a health and safety film warning against

long loose hair at work.

She eventually changed her hairstyle for the war effort and

this was the beginning of the end for her hollywood

career.

Veronica died of Hepatitis and kidney failure aged just 50.

Veronica Lake November 14, 1922 – July 7, 1973
